Seville, June 17, 2020.- The XXI Bienal de Flamenco presented its program this morning from the Alcázar. Faced with the scenario that has caused the health crisis, the rethinking of its program has been the central issue on which the strategies and work of the Seville city hall turned from the first moment.
The Bienal de Flamenco has wanted to maintain the commitment acquired with the participating artists, and aware of being an essential engine for the reactivation of the flamenco industry, it has exhausted until the last moments the different alternatives that have been shuffling to shape, finally, the programming 2020.
There will be 51 shows from August 7, in which every weekend of the month they include performances at the Monastery of San Jerónimo, to October 4. The Monastery concerts are scheduled outdoors for summer nights.
More than 80% of the shows presented are absolute premieres. The venues chosen, in addition to the San Jerónimo Monastery, are: Lope de Vega Theater, Central Theater, Real Alcázar, San Luis de los Franceses church, Morocco Pavilion (headquarters of the Tres Culturas Foundation) and Cartuja Monastery (headquarters of the Center Andalusian Museum of Contemporary Art, the International University of Andalusia and the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage).
A flamenco summer at the Monastery
The cycle that the Bienal de Flamenco contemplated for the Alameda Theater in September is brought forward to the month of August. It will be a program that will occupy Fridays and Saturdays. For her, the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Buenavista has been chosen, located in the neighborhood of San Jerónimo. The Biennial rescues it as it did in the first editions to be an exceptional scenic enclave, now, on summer nights.
The Monastery will host the most experimental flamenco in which a good number of young musicians work, linking the most avant-garde proposals in sound and visual shows to this art.
From August 7 to 29, the Biennial will offer open-air sound and scenic proposals in what will become a Biennial expanded in time and space, by also adding in this edition the Moroccan Pavilion and the Cartuja Monastery like new flamenco places. Thus, on August 7th, Diego Villegas, a multi-instrumentalist musician born in Sanlucar de Barrameda, in Cádiz, will be featured. Diego has a personal style in which flamenco is interpreted flirting with jazz, bossa nova or Latin jazz, without ever losing its roots and pure spirit and always playing with improvisation. On this occasion he will be accompanied by the Electric-Acoustic Band to perform Cinco . On August 8, the M. de Puchero formation he will arrive from Granada with a loud Flamenco . It will be a cantaora proposal based on the harmonic play of voices of different timbres and exceptional sound quality to offer a new version of the cantes.
The second weekend will feature, on August 14, an authentic guitar recital by Rycardo Moreno. His work De Barro will be full of cantiñas, rondeñas, bulerías and farrucas, among other flamenco styles. On August 15, the Raúl Cantizano night is reserved . His second solo album is entitled “Zona acordonada”, the flamenco guitar being once again the absolute protagonist. It will be a scenic, visual and performative show.
The third weekend will open with Artomático. It will be on August 21. Artomático is a project in which the most avant-garde electronics merges with genres such as flamenco in a permanent dialogue with experimentation. He will present ElectroFlamenco . Without a doubt, it will be a novel stage and sound event. The 22nd will be the day of Los Voluble . Inspired by the “free party is not a crime” movement, Los Voluble will present Flamenco is not a crime, a proposal in which flamenco and electronics intersect with critical culture and political remix video. Pedro and Benito Jiménez have been committed to experimentation, remixing, live cinema and digital folklore for more than two decades.
To close this summer month in the city, on the 28th it will be the turn of the Califato ¾ group , an Andalusian folklore band. LÂ TREÇE PUERTÂ is the name chosen for his show in which, through a tour of the gates that the city of Seville had, a journey through time will be made through its past and present. On Sunday 29, Gualberto will become an electric Duende closing the performances at the Monastery of San Jerónimo.

The Lope de Vega Theater
The Andalusian Flamenco Ballet, on the night of the 5th and at the Lope de Vega Theater, will open in September. The group, directed by Úrsula López, bailaora and choreographer from Cordoba, will stage the play El Maleficio de la Mariposa where the choreographies, dances and dances that Federico García Lorca worked, saw or performed are explored, fixed and given splendor. he could see, tempt, glimpse, verify throughout his life and in his death itself.
El Lope de Vega will host 15 concerts full of great names in flamenco singing and dancing. For the artistic director, choreographer and dancer, Jesús Carmona , September 11 is reserved. It is co-produced by the Sadler’s Wells Theater, Flamenco Festival USA, Centro Choreografico del Canal, Gachi Pisani Producciones and Compañía Jesús Carmona.
María Terremoto proposes Poetry is you . It will be on September 13. Two days later, on the 15th, the cantaor El Pele will take center stage at the Lope with A sangre .
Flamenco dance will once again flood the theater with Antonio Canales , a Sevillian bailaor who returns to the Bienal with Torero & Sevilla a compás on September 17. A double session that combines, on the one hand, flamenco dance and the world of the bull; and on the other, the tribute it offers to the figure of Antonio Machado.
Cante will become the undisputed protagonist in the following days. Tomás de Perrate will present Tres Blow on September 19, and will be followed on September 21 by El Granaíno with Maestros recalling the figures of Chocolate, Fosforito and Enrique Morente.
Trío Arbós and Rafael de Utrera will raise the curtain on September 23 to embark on the Travesías . Inés Bacán , the cantaora from Lebrija, will evoke the Memories of a Survivor on September 25; and Rancapino Chico , the boy who began to sing pure flamenco at the age of five, will give a cante recital on the 27th under the title of A look at the past . La Tremendita with her show RT (Tremenda) , as a flamenco singer of the XXI century and forged in her father’s cante, will strum her electric guitar offering her very personal voice to the audience on September 29.
Already in the month of October there will be a moment for the dance of the hand of Olga Pericet in An infinite body . The Lope de Vega Theater program will end with Estrella Morente, who will stage Morente & Carbonell , honoring a flamenco saga and surnames with art that it can boast of. These two appointments will be respectively on October 1 and 4.
The concerts scheduled at the Lope de Vega Theater will begin at 8.30 pm.

At the Central Theater:
The performances on this stage of the Isla de la Cartuja will begin on September 6 with the bailaora Rocío Molina and a dialogue between dance and flamenco guitar, as a trilogy in a double program, with pieces that will give rise to one of the most original creations in this edition under the complex title of Inicio (Uno) and Al fondo Riela (Lo otro del Uno). Excerpt from guitar trilogy . This creation has the co-production of Teatros del Canal de Madrid, Scène National du sud-Aquitaine (France), National Theater of Chaillot and Theater of Nîmes. It will be followed by Fernando Romero on the 8th with Dialogues of Time, landscapes between Debussy, Ravel and Stravinski from the prism of flamenco dance, and Anabel Veloso will present her creation on September 10, which she has called Gold on Blue .
The La Lupi Flamenco Company will disembark on September 12 to show a Hidden Language with the stage direction of Juan Dolores. And that of María del Mar Moreno arrives on September 14 with Living Memory .
Choni Compañía Flamenca el 16 proposes breaking schemes and presenting a duality in which it finds itself at all times. Leather / Body is the title of his latest creation.

Mercedes de Córdoba , the bailaora who started when she was only four years old and who has worked in great companies such as Javier Latorre or Yerbabuena, wants to show her Being, neither with you nor without me at the Biennial, and she will do so on September 24 . In the Real Alcázar
The Royal Palace, next to the Cathedral of Seville and one of the most visited monuments in the city, will host ten concerts throughout the Biennial where the piano, the guitar and even the harp will be the invited instruments.
The piano will inaugurate the program at the Alcázar at night in Seville with flamenco notes, and will be played by the hands of Pedro Ricardo Miño for a Universo Jondo on September 17. The flamenco guitar will appear as the central instrument the next two days with Javier Patino and Let it take you on the 18th, and on the 19th with Manuel de La Luz who will interpret Mi clave .
Andrés Barrios on September 24 will be a surprise as a young original artist. Barrios is a pianist from Utrera, who amazes for his good taste and precocity, elegantly mixing flamenco, jazz and Latin rhythms. His proposal is entitled Universo Lorca .
Daniel Casares presents on September 25 his eighth work, intimate and personal, and in which virtuosity and lyricism are exhibited in their maximum splendor. Guitarrísimo is the title.
José Acedo with his album Triana DF Distrito Flamenco collects different ways of understanding the flamenco heritage of the Triana neighborhood. Three generations of artists shake hands on his guitar, which runs through, with vibrant harmonies, styles ranging from bulería to soleá. He will take the stage on September 26.
Antonio Rey, another of the most representative figures of current flamenco guitar, will offer a concert on September 30 under the title of Flamenco without borders . And one of the youngest promises, José del Tomate , will bring sounds of Almería on October 1 from an old Plaza.
They will end the concerts in the Alcázar with the strings of the harp of Ana Crismán in Soníos del harpa negra on October 2, and with the guitarist Dani de Morón , the doors of the Palace will be closed definitively a day later with Believe to see .

This jewel of the Baroque, located in Calle San Luis in Seville, has been, in recent editions, a place of high heritage value to listen and feel the flamenco of the Biennial. The violagambist Fahmi Alqhai together with the bailaora Patricia Guerrero will meet in Los Paraísos Perdidos , a creation conceived as a historical fantasy about the evolution of dance starting from black and Indian dances to the most stylized dance. An interpretation with great artistic and aesthetic license, without searching for roots. The appointment will take place on September 16. For the 30th, space was left for the flamenco piano, always elegant, by Dorantes. He will delight with a world premiere of his next work Identidad.

In the Monastery of La Cartuja:
The so-called Monastery of Santamaría de Las Cuevas in la Cartuja will host a new proposal, as always, surprising from the creator Andrés Marín. The perfect vigil contemplates a set of dance micro-pieces that will be performed by the Monastery’s premises in the so-called canonical hours, from before dawn until compline in a show open to the public. The entire process will be documented and filmed and will constitute a work of visual art.
The show will take place at 9:00 p.m. on October 3.

In the Moroccan Pavilion (Fundación Tres Culturas):
As a novelty in this edition, there is a program that arises from the collaboration that the Bienal de Flamenco maintains with the Tres Culturas Foundation. In order to bring the knowledge of folklore closer to Mediterranean countries, a series of concerts will be held that will take place in the current Hassan II Pavilion, known as the Moroccan Pavilion at the Universal Exposition in Seville. They will be on September 14 and 21 at 9:00 p.m. respectively with Berk Gürman and his show From Anatolia to Andalusia and Alaa Zouiten and Mona Boutchebak with Aficionado, who will mix the two musical cultures to make only one.

The Biennial has an important foreign audience that travels every two years specifically to attend the scheduled shows and activities. France, the USA, Japan, Germany and Italy, among other countries, contribute more than 30% of the spectators. Thinking of all those flamenco lovers who, due to the situation in which we are immersed in the global health crisis, are unable to travel to the city of Seville, shows will be chosen in the disciplines of singing, dancing and flamenco playing so that they can Open, free and either direct or delayed, they can enjoy a telematic experience in which the Seville and Biennial pairing will be shown to the world as a reference of heritage city and city of flamenco par excellence.
The selection of spaces will be made taking into account their great heritage and architectural value. Not in vain are spaces of singular Sevillian beauty: the Real Alcázar, the church of San Luis de los Franceses, the Monastery of La Cartuja, and Lope de Vega himself.
